REMARKS; William was the Son
of David and Margaret Rowney and brother to Maggie, Mary Ann and Thomas. Prior to the war he was a labourer in a brick
field. William was a member of the Third
Battalion Central Antrim Ulster
Volunteers and signed the Ulster
Covenant in Carrickfergus Courthouse on Ulster day in 1912. He enlisted with the 12th
Battalion Royal Irish Rifles in September 1914, one of the first men from
Carrickfergus to enlist. He was injured
in shelling on the 1st day of the Battle
of the Somme and subsequently lost his right
eye. Following recovery he was returned
to action and served out the rest of the war as a sniper. In 1917 he married Mary Hagan and
subsequently had 3 children. William died
in 1962 in Carrickfergus aged 66.
Hello there. I've just seen your entry on the Carrickfergus roll of honour relating to my great uncle, William Rowney of 37 Davy's St. He lost an eye but came home safely. He had another sister, Mary (Ann) Rowney, the eldest of 4 siblings, and there was a younger brother Thomas. His sister Mary married James Hodges Kelly RN (who served at the Battle of Jutland in WW1. They had 5 children, the penultimate of whom, David Kelly, was my father. I had never seen a photo of William Rowney, but can see he is the image of my grandmother. I am anxious to learn more about the Rowney family and would love a copy of the photo or press cutting you have. Presumably, it must be one of his descendants who provided the info? I well remember William's other sister, my great aunt Maggie McClure. I have traced the Rowney family back to 1792 but oddly cannot find any records for Willaim's parents (my great grandparents David Rowney, a sailor turned coal carter, and Margaret Jane nee Patterson).
ReplyDeleteI know my mum would love to hear more about your tracing the family back to 1792.
DeleteHello, apologies I did not see your reply until last night. Any information I have up to know was from newspapers or war records. It is only yourself and Mark that have been able to paint a fuller picture. Thank you again for the information, I will update his profile accordingly and let you see it. If I find out anything else I will certainly let you know.
DeleteP.S Do you know if James Hodges Kelly was from Carrickfergus? I can find no record of him and I wouldn't want to miss anyone out.

There were two William Rowney's from Carrickfergus who fought in WW1. One was shelled on the first day of the Somme in 1916. He lost an eye and served the rest of the war as a sniper. We have a photograph of him wounded in uniform. He married Mary Hagan in 1917. He died in the 1960's leaving behind 3 children, the youngest of which William died this year. William had two children, Elizabeth and William. Aunt Liz moved to Scotland in the 1980's. Dad still lives in Carrickfergus. My brother David lives in Belfast and I live in London.
ReplyDeleteThe second William Rowney was a relative of my great grandfather - a cousin I think. He died during WW1 but I don't know how. His name is listed on the plaque in the archway entrance to St Nicholas Church.
Thank you very much for the information folks, I really should update this section of the blog - the working book I have does have 2 William Rowney's in it.
ReplyDeleteI would love to get a picture of the one you refer to above, have you any way of emailing it to me? I will update the entries with the new info I have here and let you see them. Thanks again John

ReplyDeleteWilliam Rowney was my great grandfather. He didn't loone his sight at the Somme, although he was badly wounded, but I'm not sure what his injuries were, but he returned to service in 1917. He lost the sight of his left eye at Ypres in summer of that year, either at Messines or Langemarck. He was blown out of a trench by a German shell, and blinded in both eyes, he regained the sight of his right eye but the left was permanently blinded. I have a photo of him in hospital in France and one of him recovering in London.
