REMARKS; Serjeant Robert Cambridge - died 12/2/1917New Zealand Training Unit - service number
Robert was born in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, around 1884. He first saw service in 1902, in the Boer War in South Africa, as part of the 29th Imperial Yeomanry (Irish Horse). He is recorded as being awarded a medal with two clasps.
On his return, in 1906, he married Anita Wilcox (possibly Wilson), in Barton-upon-Urwell, Lancashire and shortly after they moved to New Zealand. At the time of his enlistment, on 23rd August 1916, they were living at 144 Hills Road, St Albans, Christchurch and Robert was working as an ironmongery buyer for the DIC Department Store in Christchurch, where he was also in charge of the Hardware Department. He was also the treasurer of the Veteran's Association
Robert initially joined the 23rd Reinforcements, as a Corporal, and on 20th November 1916 was promoted to Serjeant. On 15th January 1917, he was transferred to Featherston Military Camp on the North Island.
Robert died on 12th February 1917 "from an accident occurring or disease contracted while training" and is buried in Christchurch (Linwood) Cemetery (block 35, lot 264), New Zealand. There is a reference in School News to him being a member of the King's African Rifles but this is believed to be incorrect.

John was born on 2nd February 1897, the son of William Thomas and
Genna G M Clarke -  In 1911, the family
address was recorded as house 4.1, Castlerock Town, Downhill, Co. Londonderry. On
‘Ulster Day’, Saturday, 28th September 1912, Clarke signed the
Ulster Covenant at Articlave Orange Hall.
In October 1914, Clarke joined the
Northern Bank at Carrickfergus and took up residence in the town. In July 1916,
Clarke volunteered and was enlisted into the 9th Battalion Royal
Fusiliers, City of London Regiment.
This regiment was in the 18th (Eastern) Division involved in the
attacks in October 1916 on the stubbornly defended and vital position of and
around the Schwaben Redoubt.  On 7th October there was a determined
counter-attack by the Germans to recapture the Redoubt.  It appears that
Private Clarke was killed during this assault.  His body was never
recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

REMARKS: James Crichton is one of only 2 Carrickfergus natives to have won the Victoria Cross the highest award for bravery in combat. He was born in Carrickfergus in July 1882. Before emigrating to New Zealand he served with the British Cameron Highlanders, and saw active service in South Africa. He enlisted in the 1st New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 22 August 1914 and embarked for Egypt in October of that year as a Corporal in the N.Z. Army Service Corps. He served on Gallipoli from October to December, 1915, and left for France in April, 1916, as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant.
In April, 1918, while serving as a Warrant Officer
with 1st N.Z. Field Bakery, he voluntarily relinquished his rank and
transferred as a Private to the Auckland Infantry Regiment. He won his Victoria
Cross for conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty near Crevecoeur, France,
on 30 September 1918.
His citation reads as follows.
"Although wounded in the foot, he continued to
advance with the troops, despite difficult canal and river obstacles. When his
platoon was subsequently forced back by a counter-attack, he succeeded in
carrying a message. This involved his swimming a river and crossing an area swept
by machine-gun fire before he subsequently rejoined his platoon. Later, he
undertook on his own initiative to save a bridge which had been mined, and
although under close fire of machine guns and snipers, he succeeded in removing
the charges, returning with the fuses and detonators. Though suffering from a
painful wound, he displayed the highest degree of valour and devotion to
duty." (London Gazette, 12 November 1918).
He returned to New Zealand after the war and was
discharged in September of that 1919. In 1937 he attended the Coronation of
King George VI as a Sergeant in the N.Z. Coronation Contingent. He died in Auckland on 27 September 1961 and is buried in the
Soldiers' Cemetery at Waikumete, Auckland.
